Last week, I had a peculiar encounter with a religious taxpayer (as he claimed it). He kept on asking so many questions related to where his money and the people’s money go. He sighted the flaws of the government, included the “inappropriateness” and irrational philosophy of the leftists and blamed the common people, in general, for not patronizing the “right” ways to living life in contentment — socially, economically stable.
He attacked the government: “Why do we have corrupt leaders? Why are they corrupt? Why are they corrupting? Why is our democratic government system not working in our country? Why do we have to have a democratic government when we cannot even claim the sense of democracy in our own rights and privileges as citizens of this country? How about trying a reform in the government? But, will this work out? Haha. I doubt.”
Now, as a concerned citizen, he was raising the issue on where the people’s money go. Back to the people? For the people? No, he wasn’t satisfied. He didn’t even want to claim the government’s proposals and projects to be somehow effective and beneficial for the people.
Still not enough, he then started to put the blame on the leftists (after putting the blame to the government). Actually, he meant activists. But he deduced activists to be leftists. And these activists he asserted are the “iskolar ng bayan”, those that are given free education subsidized by the people’s taxes. As I was anticipating, he continued his sermon again: I am paying my tax piously. I am subsidizing the education of these “iskolar ng bayan.” What for? For these recognized scholars to squander government funds intended for them for their future? To oppose the government? To be ultra-lefts? For one, through rallies? Organizing and heading a very unethical way to catch public attention? Professing their principles with valor as if trying to point out that there is nobody besides them that can defend such values? These principles? Are they true? Are they sincere? With all dignity? Or they’re just making faces, wearing masks to preach to the people their “concern” to the country and to its people? To the fullest of their pride and honor? How long can they live with their principles? It’s senseless. Because they’re pretentious. They pretend to know every sensitive issue, everything. But the fact of the matter is they don’t! Too pity for those who believe in them and think that their principles are nothing but righteous and worth-fighting for. And as a result, the people themselves have been sorted out as the real “victims” of these vulnerable issues. The mass, the people, they are those who are suffering. They are torn between two opposing ideologies. We are torn between two opposing ideologies Now where should they stand? Where should we stand?
And these people, he continued. Why don’t they insist a stand? A new-devised ideology so we can add one more to the two provoking dogmas. Three all in all: the government’s, the lefists’ and the bomb, a new ideology to be created by the common people to ruin out everything! So we could mess up everything. After all, everything is a mess. It is undeniably true that these people contribute a lot to messing even more this world. Oh! C’mon, we cannot just be the government and do corruption or be activist – leftist and do nothing else other than wasting resources. We should be creating a new philosophy to bomb the nation. It’s the only way to shake the nation in order to realize the country’s struggle to achieve stability. But who can be reliable for this? I suggest the people; but I doubt, they’re ignorant beings.
Damn. The government.
Damn. The people.
I can see confusion and anger, hatred and disorientation, pessimism…still confusion and confusion again, unresolved confusions… in his deep eyes.
